Ready for Work supports women at the beginning of their careers

Stella Kasdagli, co-founder of Women on Top, speaks to A Magic Cabinet about what they do to support female employability.

Ready for Work is an educational and employability support programme run by Women on Top.  It is now in its second year, with the aim of assisting women at the beginning of their professional life.

From the 9th to the 13th of March, thirty young women will attend a series of free practical and interactive professional development workshops, which will help them acquire or improve their skills in order to find employment.

The workshops do not focus on any specific profession and are open to graduates, women looking for their first job or one which is relevant to their field of study.

The attendees will be coached in ways to find employment, including drafting a CV and cover letter, how to stand out in an interview, how to promote themselves online, how to present their ideas in public as well as developing in a professional environment.

There will then be a three month mentoring period with female executives.

«Last year’s attendees told us that what really worked, compared with similar events, is that it was very hands on.  They were able to talk to other women and share their experiences. They also did a lot of networking, which is crucial in the early stages of anyone’s career», Stella noted.

Why are these workshops solely aimed at women? «While we believe in equality, we aim to create a safe environment where women can share what it means to be a woman in the workplace. Topics include pregnancy, sexual harassment and even menstruation», Stella further explained.

There is a distinct difference between the male and female professional experience. A man can develop his career throughout his most productive years.

If a woman has to stay in a lower position than her skills would justify, solely for reasons of survival, and then decides to have a family, she’ll most likely have to give up her job.  These women, who are usually over forty, find re-entering the workplace very hard.

This trap is what Ready for Work is hoping to avoid by teaching women how to acquire the right skill set in the beginning of their career, so they can be in positions with development potential.

What would Stella advise someone who is just starting out? «To take note of everything happening around her as women don’t always understand they’re being discriminated against. Women accept “minor attacks” that in the longterm affect their self confidence and how other people perceive them». They should be able to stand up for themselves and for each other.

Last January Stella and her team launched their book club «On The Shelf», a project which hopes to encourage networking, education, creativity and support among women.

In the beginning of each month they recommend a book, usually non-fiction and relevant to equality in public life.  At the end of the month, they get together at the Library on Gender and Equality, to exchange ideas and create a community based on the love of books and their vision of promoting equality in all walks of life.
