Dogtherapy.gr dogs at your service!

Dogtherapy.gr and their adorable team of four legged colleagues help those with developmental and learning challenges.

The Dogtherapy.gr team, run by trainer Konstantinos Koilias, was created to provide assistance and support to children and adults who face developmental and learning difficulties as well as mental health challenges.

Konstantinos is assisted by Konstantina Thanasoula, who spoke to A Magic Cabinet about Dogtherapy.gr and the special relationship between children and dogs.

With a love for both humans and animals as its core, Dogtherapy.gr provides therapeutic sessions in collaboration with psychologists, speech therapists and of course dogs.

The team includes Vangelis, their labradoodle «bear» adored by all children, Kristy, a gorgeous griffon, three-coloured giant Diego, a Bernese mountain dog and the resident sweetheart, Karamelino, a mini poodle. They have all been trained to be great company but also provide assistance and support.

“There are multiple benefits from the interaction between dogs and children”, Konstantina says. “Kids are socialised, they become fit through walking and playing with the animals, they develop psychologically and learn to be responsible and disciplined”.

The sessions can be in a group or on one to one basis and can take place outdoors or in a specially managed indoor environment. Each attendee’s particular characteristics are always the focus, with the team assessing their progress at two-month intervals.

Dogtherapy.gr assists adults and children, as young as four years old, who are on the autistic spectrum, have learning difficulties and ADHD.

The dogs usually start off the interaction with the children, making it feel like a game. They become their teacher and friend.

“Dogs keep children stable and calm, making it easier for the therapist to work with them”, according to Konstantina. “By the third session children are perfectly comfortable with the dog as they don’t have the same sense of fear as adults. That’s why these sessions tend to be more effective with children”.
